To solve related rates problems:
- find out what related rate (derivative) the problem is looking for.
- write out information given.
- find out the relationship between variables.
- fill out known values.
- do necessary substitutions (e.g. ) (for cylinder problems) before differentiation.
- do implicit differentiation (relative to some other variable, e.g. instead of just ).
- plug in the values, rearrange so that one side becomes the required related rate / derivative (e.g. )
