In Active Directory, service accounts are used for service maintenance (e.g. MSSQLServer). Windows require certain services to be paired with a service account.
Service accounts should not be domain admins
A common misconfiguration for service accounts is making them domain admins to save the efforts of properly configuring delegation. This can be extremely dangerous since if the service is compromised, then so is the entire domain.
