The reduction potential $\xi$ of a species describes how likely it is to acquire or lose electrons in terms of $\mathrm{V}$. If the species tends to be reduced, then $\xi >0$.

Standard reduction potential (${\xi }^{\circ }$) refers to reduction potential under standard conditions ($1\mathrm{M}$ concentrations of aqueous ions or $1\mathrm{atm}$ pressure).
