enthalpy of formation

The enthalpy of formation ($\Delta H_f$) of a substance is $\Delta H$ (change in enthalpy) caused by forming a single mole of that substance. In other words, enthalpy of formation of a substance is the $\Delta H$ of a reaction whose only product is $1\mathrm{mol}$ of that substance.
