Consumption is the total spending by households on goods and services.
Housing is not consumption!
Purchase of a house does not count as consumption but investment, but construction does count as consumption. Note that housing services do count as consumption and is accounted in GDP (e.g. renting, hotels). For renters, consumption includes rent payments. For homeowners, consumption includes the imputed rental value of the house, but not the purchase price or mortgage payment.
Not any consumption is part of GDP!
Sometimes a product or good may count as consumption but not in GDP (i.e. counterbalanced in other components in GDP).
