SMTP

SMTP is a protocol for sending or otherwise transferring email messages (typically between mail servers, but also between clients and mail servers).

Related protocols for email clients syncing a mailbox with a mail server:

• POP3: just downloads & deletes emails from server
• IMAP: actually syncs stuff
