This article can be used to support the idea that Chopin’s ballades are not as closely connected to actual poems any more. The question of whether the ballades are program or absolute music remains though. Ballades are by definition narrative and is therefore at least to some extent programmatic, but the looser connection to actual poems has led the ballades to the absolute side slightly, for better or for worse.
